6 Days Umbwe Route

OVERVIEW

The Umbwe Route is designed for experienced and adventurous climbers seeking a true challenge on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep and direct approach, Umbwe delivers an intense sense of achievement for those who reach the summit. The route cuts through all of Kilimanjaro’s climate zones — from dense tropical rainforest to permanent ice — in a short and demanding ascent.

The trek begins at Umbwe Gate and follows a steep trail to Umbwe Camp on the first day. While Umbwe is considered the most challenging route on Kilimanjaro, carefully positioned camps help support proper acclimatization along the way.

The Umbwe Route is available only as a 6-day itinerary and is strongly recommended for climbers in excellent physical condition with prior high-altitude trekking experience. Due to its difficulty, it is not suitable for inexperienced hikers.

Arrive in Tanzania

Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Later, your guide will provide a detailed trek briefing and conduct a thorough equipment check to ensure you are fully prepared for the climb.

Day 1 - Umbwe Gate (1800 m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2850 m)

Distance covered: 11 km
Approximate time taken: 7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meal: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included

Your guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel in the morning for introductions and a final equipment check before driving to Umbwe Gate (1800 m). After completing park registration and search-and-rescue formalities, you will begin trekking through dense rainforest.

The ascent to Umbwe Cave Camp is long and steep, with a significant altitude gain on the first day. A steady pace is essential. Rain showers are common in this zone, so proper rain gear is important. Upon arrival at camp, your tents will be set up and dinner prepared. Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2 - Umbwe Cave Camp (2850 m) to Barranco Camp (3900 m)

Distance covered: 8 km
Approximate time taken: 5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meal: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included

After an early start and hearty breakfast, the trail transitions from rainforest into moorland. Weather permitting, this is often the first opportunity to enjoy views of Mount Meru. The hike is moderate in length, and you will reach Barranco Camp by around lunchtime.

Barranco Camp is located within a massive volcanic valley and offers excellent acclimatization conditions. After lunch, the afternoon is free for rest and recovery.

Day 3 - Barranco Camp (3900 m) to Karanga Camp (4000 m)

Distance covered: 6 km
Approximate time taken: 4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meal: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included

The day begins with an early ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Leaving camp early helps avoid congestion on the trail. Although the climb looks intimidating, it is non-technical and takes about one hour.

After reaching the top, you will enjoy views of Kibo Peak before continuing toward Karanga Camp via a series of ascents and descents. Upon arrival, a warm lunch will be served. Later, you will complete a short acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, gaining approximately 200 meters in elevation before returning to Karanga Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 - Karanga Camp (4000 m) to Barafu Camp (4640 m)

Distance covered: 4 km
Approximate time taken: 3 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meal: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included

After breakfast, you will continue ascending through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, Kilimanjaro’s southern base camp. The route is exposed and rocky, offering expansive views of Kibo and the surrounding landscape.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will have lunch and rest in preparation for the summit attempt. Dinner is served early, followed by a short sleep before the midnight ascent.

You will wake around midnight for light refreshments before beginning the summit ascent. The climb follows steep scree slopes for 4–5 hours, gaining significant altitude in a short distance. You should reach Stella Point (5756 m) at sunrise.

From Stella Point, continue for approximately one hour to Uhuru Peak (5895 m), the highest point in Africa. After photos at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and a brief rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp for dinner and overnight.
